Simple Home Office Tour: Turning A Closet Into An Office

Come tour my simple home office in the closet of our spare room. Create a functional space for creative expression, reading, managing, and much-needed “me time”.

As moms and homemakers, we share our time and space with our families all of the time. I wanted a space to call my own, read, and work on my blog. My husband built me this amazing home office in our spare room’s closet.

I run my blog and manage our home as a homemaker from this simple home office. I plan material for homeschooling my two children and work on my personal interest and hobbies.

Since marriage, motherhood, and managing a home, I have felt a sense of loss of my own space. I believe many of us feel this way but don’t admit it. Once I began working on my personal growth, I realized I could pursue my callings outside of the home and keep the home first.

This simple home office space has a minimalistic design and more than enough storage for whatever I need. My favorite part of this DIY office desk is the corner nook on each side of the desk. A few things I keep on my desk and the above shelf are:

  • camera equipment
  • mini tripod for my iPhone
  • paper cutter
  • laminator
  • small wooden box for my cords
  • office supply
  • folders and notebooks

Before I share what’s below my desk, I’d like to share what is on the shelves on the wall just outside the space.

Top Shelf

On the top shelf, I have three baskets that house different things. Now, what’s in these baskets may change at any given time. But here is a breakdown of what I have in them now.

In the basket on the left, I keep soy candles, spare eyeglasses, and a few other miscellaneous items. In the center basket I keep snacks I don’t want to share with my kids, ha. On the right, I have gardening material such as seed packets, a notepad, a pencil, and garden markers.

Bottom Shelf

On the bottom shelf, I have books, a wireless book light, bible, daily devotional, and a beautiful figurine that says, “I Will Praise The Lord”. I like that I have my books displayed here because it allows me to use this simple home office space as a reading nook.

I am still amazed at how nice this closet conversion turned out when I look at it. Since I primarily use this office space to work on my blog, I have a second monitor that stays on the desk. I like the flexibility of multiple screens because I am often researching information for my blog posts.

I want to add a few pieces of art on the wall for inspiration. With that being said, this space is not complete, but I love having something just for me.

Underneath the desk is plenty of storage. My husband added two shelves which allowed me to store books, notebooks, and some of my projects. Our two girls also enjoy sneaking under here with blankets to draw so I keep a clipboard of their art here too.

On one side I keep our printer and printer supplies. There is a hole cut into the corner of the shelf so that the cord can reach the outlet that is above the desk.

I hope that this short tour of my simple home office inspires you to create a space just for you no matter how small. Don’t have a spare closet to convert? You could honestly get a basket or rolling cart and fill it with things just for you and create a mobile home office.
