So your kid loves being outside and you want to know what careers exist that align with their love of nature. Furthermore, you want to provide resources that your children can use to identify different skills they have that might better serve them in certain careers over others.
Follow a day in the life of 25 people whose jobs include working with the great outdoors. This is a must-have book- I like the Outdoors… what jobs are there? by Carron Brown and illustrated by Roberto Blefari.
When I was younger, I would spend all day outside if I could. I also remember camping as a Girl Scout, digging in the dirt, rolling down a big hill, and taking naps on the lawn. Of course, my favorite thing to do was climb trees. There was something about spending time with nature that felt so grounding.
Careers such as a doctor, teacher, lawyer, police officer, etc., are usually talked about the most in school. As a result, many kids just pick one of those careers, unknowing of the alternatives that might align better with their passions.
If your child loves nature and being outdoors, the following book would be a great addition to your home library.
Book Recommendation
I like the Outdoors… what jobs are there? by Carron Brown and illustrated by Roberto Blefari
In this book, children can take a look inside the daily lives of 25 amazing careers that involve working with the outdoors. Many of these jobs I have never heard of.
Being Outside as a Career
My daughter’s favorite jobs for being outside
The paleontologist (page 11)
For the last few months, my little one has been interested in dinosaurs and inevitably, she discovered the career path of a paleontologist. You can usually find her outside in the sand bin digging up “bones” she’s hidden on any given day.
Park Ranger (pages 30-31)
This comes as no surprise. Especially since she was born in Alaska and seeing wild moose and bears as a toddler. How cool would it be to have a career where you get to watch and admire wildlife?
My favorite jobs for being outside
Ecologist (pages 24-25)
I have, for years, been intrigued by the way in which all things work together and how one thing affects the other.
It wasn’t until having a conversation with my friend, who is very knowledgeable about ecosystems and gardening, that I could put an actual name to what I was so curious about- ecology.
I am a huge fan of this book series, That’s a Job, published by Kane Miller. Unlike a general community helpers book, this book actually walks you through a day in the life of each career.
Crop Farmer (pages 28-29)
Growing up, my mother had a small garden. Though I didn’t spend much time in the garden, I loved the idea of growing your own food and being self-sufficient. After we bought our first house, I decided to start our garden. As I learned many lessons during our first season of gardening, I became fascinated with farming and agriculture.
However, I notice it is a very demanding career. Again, this book gives an honest peek into the day of these careers. This would be very helpful in any library, especially a child’s homeschool library.
Botanist (pages 40-41)
Plants and herbs are very fascinating to me. They provide healing and restoration. Also, they add beauty to any environment. I would have loved to spend a day in the life of a botanist when I was in high school. However, botany is not the typical “career day” occupation we learn about in school. If you have a little one who loves learning the names of plants and their purpose, this might be a potential career to explore.
Guide to Your Perfect Career
Finally, at the end of this book, you will find a guide to help match possible careers that align with your child’s skills, personal qualities, and interests.
