What better gift for dad than a handmade portrait from his little one(s). Download this free template and have a blast coloring, painting, or crafting dad’s portrait through the eyes of his children.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • free Father’s Day Portrait Template, or oval-shaped piece of cardboard
  • blank construction paper (for open-ended creating)
  • paper strips (construction paper, magazines, etc. cut into strips)
  • markers, crayons, or tempera paint and paintbrushes
  • Sharpie (black)
  • scissors and glue (hot glue, craft glue, and/or glue sticks)
  • loose parts (sticks, yarn, pebbles, buttons, flower petals, rice, beans, etc.)

Want to take this template to the next level? Try laminating the template for playdoh and loose parts play. Or, consider gluing the sheet to a piece of cardboard and gluing on loose parts such as rice and beans (or acorns and flower petals if you want to avoid using food as craft material).

Creating the Portrait

Pair this invitation with books and read-aloud about dads and facial features that make people unique (hair, eyes, ears, lips, neck, etc.).

Remember to keep things free and open-ended. Try to control your urge to step in and direct your littles on how to create the portrait. I do not recommend giving a completed portrait as an example of what theirs should look like. The beauty in this project or craft is that the child is the artist.
